CFAD CONDUCTS A BACK-TO-BACK LECTURE ON MARIOLOGY AND ICONOGRAPHY & VOLENTES TE VIDERE: SEEING CHRIST'S FACE IN ART

The College of Fine Arts and Design was very much honored to have Rev. Fr. Edgardo D. Alaurin, O.P., and Rev. Fr. Isidro C. Abaño, O.P. as lecturers during the Back-to-Back Lectures on January 30, 2013 at the Civil Law Auditorium.

The first lecture was by CFAD's regent, Fr. Alaurin, who enlightened the CFAD faculty and students on Mariology and Iconography. His lecture was a comprehensive discussion on the basis of Mariology, the definition of Iconography and Iconology, the historical background of the Western and Eastern Churches, the development of the theology of icons, and the Nestorianism and Iconoclasm Controversies. Part of Fr. Alaurin's lecture was his presentation of the premise, "Without theology, the veneration of Icons will simply be idolatry."

Therefore, according to Fr. Alaurin, "Icons must transcend the mere visible images and carry with them the theological doctrines of the Christian faith such as Trinitarian, Christological, mariological, and the Cult of the Saints".

Rev. Fr. Isidro C. Abaño, O.P. on the Apperance of Christ in Art

Later in the afternoon, Fr. Abaño, director of the UST Museum and the first regent and dean of CFAD, presented his lecture on Volentes Te Videre: Seeing Christ's Face in Art. He shared Heinrich Pfeifer's Thematic Cycles, the "seven levels of figurative coverage in the representation of Christ in art". Fr. Abaño also reiterated the unique nature of Jesus, both Divine and Human; thus characterized as the almighty & the eternal as a GOD; and the servant & the one among-us as a MAN.
